Holistic: [Sometimes spelled wholistic.]

Considering a whole thing or being to be more than a collection of its parts. Treating the whole person rather than just the Symptoms of a disease. To refer to any experience or philosophical understanding that is based on Oneness as in One Consciousness as the Source, substratum or foundation of reality. Also, inclusiveness of all dimensions from subtle to dense. It sees the person as a whole interrelated system rather than as mechanistic, Descartes' view adopted by allopathy. Looking at the whole system rather than just concentrating on individual components. A natural approach to healing outside Western medicine conventions. Holism (from holon, a Greek word meaning entity) is the idea that the properties of a system cannot be determined or explained by the sum of its components alone. The word, along with the adjective holistic, was coined in the early 1920s by Jan Smuts. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Smuts defined holism as "The tendency in nature to form wholes that are greater than the sum of the parts through creative evolution." Another term is "systems thinking".
