(chi·ro·prac·tic) [chiro- + Gr. prassein to do] The World Federation of Chiropractic defines chiropractic as "A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment."

First developed in 1895, today chiropractic is the largest drugless healing profession. Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nerve system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and system in your body. The nerve system consists of the brain, spinal cord and millions of nerves. The brain is protected by the skull, and the spinal cord is protected by the 24 movable bones of the spine.

It is a science of applied neurophysiologic diagnosis based on the theory that health and disease are life processes related to the function of the nervous system: irritation of the nervous system is the cause of disease; restoration and maintenance of health depend on normal function of the nervous system. It is focused on the anatomy of the spine and immediate articulation, and the condition of nerve interference.
