Art Therapy:

Although visual expression has been basic to humanity throughout history, art therapy did not emerge as a distinct profession until the 1930's. In the beginning of the 20th Century, psychiatrists became interested in their patients' artwork, and studied it to see if there were links between the art and the illness of their patients. This developed into a therapeutic technique using creative expression to assist in exploring and healing emotional traumas.

A form of psychotherapy which uses the creation of art or craft, to help release and explore the precise and personal images and metaphors which lie at the foundation of the personality, so that they can be explored and discussed within a therapeutic relationship. It is also a form of therapy that allows people with dementia opportunities to express their feelings creatively through art.
