Alexander Technique:

The Alexander Technique takes its name from F. Matthias Alexander (1868-1955), a former Shakespearean recitalist, who first observed and formulated its principles during 1890 to 1900. He demonstrated that the difficulties many people experience in learning and in physical functioning are caused by unconscious habits. The Alexander Technique provides a concrete means for overcoming these habits by teaching clients how to stop interfering with their body's innate coordination. Clients are guided through simple movements to become aware of proper physical function. As a result, they develop more control, awareness and confidence in their abilities.

The Alexander Technique is a study of freeing response that is taught by studying one's own mannerisms of posture. It is a specific method of adjusting and correcting habitual misaligned body posture in order to relieve muscle tension and allow the body to move with greater ease and efficiency. Massage and manipulation are combined with verbal instruction. This physical re-education can be used to improve posture and movement to help alleviate muscular-skeletal tensions. Alexander Technique is a method of mind and body integration, which leads to ease of movement and awareness and is usually taught in individual lessons, during which the student becomes aware of patterns of contraction in everyday activities such as walking, sitting, standing, bending and lifting.
