Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble

by Lester R. Brown

While Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, surveys worldwide environmental devastation brought on by the breakneck global industrialization, the heedless, auto-centric, “throwaway economy”: oil and water shortages, pollution, deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, collapsing fisheries, mass extinctions, looming famine and pestilence-and he hasn't even gotten to global warming offers, but “all the problems we face can be dealt with using existing technologies,” at a manageable cost or even very low-cost solutions which are currently available. It's not all gloom and doom, as long as we act.

Brown discusses human population, biological diversity, food resources, climate stabilization, energy productivity, and sustainable living. He also offers up solutions currently being implemented by a number of countries, U.S. being the exception, currently redirecting subsidies away from oil, coal and nuclear and toward renewable energy and sustainable measures in agriculture, wildlife, resource conservation, hyper-efficient cars and appliances, mass transit, and lets not forget recycling. Brown provides facts of the problems facing all of us which are scarier and more alarming than any description most often given, but honest. As you read further, Brown describes strategies by which all of these problems can be solved.

Tax-shifting, not a new concept of moving taxation away from income taxation to pollution taxation, would not increase the average person's tax burden, but it would create tremendous incentives to reduce environmental destruction and force industries to do a better job, faster, in order to make their products more environmentally friendly. Plan B 2.0 provides an honest vision of the current status in the world and the possibilities for the future. A book well worth having.
