Book Review How We Eat: Appetite, Culture, and the Psychology of Foodby Leon RappoportAn interesting book written by a psychologist who loves food, or at least studying it. Tracing culinary customs from the Stone Age to the stove top. The book provides a look at the factors and myths shaping Americans' eating habits. A quick, light read and why some us prefer sweet drinks over bitter, roasted potatoes, or mac-n-cheese and why a longtime love affair with fast food continues to endure. The reader can gain an understanding of our complex relationship with food and the choices we make. Humor makes the book an entertaining read while examining how and why we feed our faces and our mindset around eating. It provides a journey through a variety of food cultures, how food and eating habits have shaped cultures, accounting for our behavior, and creating a sense of individual and cultural identity. Overall it is a good read but lacking some detail, originality and at times familiarity with some subjects. Despite this it leads the reader wanting to dig deeper. The book is interesting and useful, a good start toward learning more, providing plenty of avenues of study of how we have influenced food or food has influenced us.
