Herbal Medicine: The Use of Herbs for Health and Healing

by V. Pitman

The books covers the basic elements of, earth, air, fire, and water adding ether to the four Greek original elements. Ms Pitman notes these elements intermingle to create three energy patterns, or humours, which make up our constitution. This is very similar to the Ayurvedic system three constitutions: Vata, Kapha, Pita, and not the Hippocratic system of medicine which made use of four humors. In the book its noted the similarity between the two systems. The book goes on to discuss a knowledge of herbs and their activity combined with the knowledge of humours allows someone to create a successful strategy for using herbs to heal. Significant benefits are then cited for the herbs, ranging in treatment.

Although it does not follow current in use herbal traditions, it does give an insight into how a system like this would have been in use in days gone by. It makes a good addition to anyones library who would like to understand Herbalism better.
