The Food Revolution: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World

by John Robbins

What can we do to help end global warming, feed the hungry worldwide, prevent cruelty to animals, avoid genetically modified foods, be healthier and live longer-eat a vegetarian diet says John Robbins, author of “Diet for a New America.”

Burning of rainforest's for the sake of expanding cattle farming or other destructive farming practices, food irradiation, hormone and antibiotic use in factory-farming methods, the true economics of meat consumption and heavy subsidies to keep prices low, increasing medical costs as a result of an unhealthy diet of saturated fats or processed foods, questionable biotechnology and the prevalence of salmonella and E. Coli are all seen as reasons to eat lower on the food chain.

Despite all the distressing information Food Revolution ends on a hopeful note, detailing growth in organic farming, public awareness and consumer activism worldwide, as well as policy changes, especially in Europe. It is well researched and well written it will spark discussion and hopefully incite readers to examine their food choices.

Food Revolution is an up-to-date and scientifically sound presentation of health benefits of a plant-based diet, pitfalls of genetically modified foods, a humane solution to world hunger and how billions of dollars spent on PR lie to the public. It provides a way to bring about a fundamental change in the way we think about food. An interesting facts from the book: half of all ocean fish caught in the world are fed to livestock, and while 2.5 acres of crop land can produce enough vegetables for twenty people the same land could produce enough grain for fifteen people, enough chicken for two people or enough beef for one-which begs the question, why are we wasting so much land, among other resources, to feed so few? It is also up to the consumer to take full responsibility for food safety as the USDA accept test results indicating 89% of hamburger tested containing E.coli 0157:H7 as accepted and normal.

Food Revolution will make you think more than twice about what you eat and hopefully act, even if all you do is seriously cut back, more than 50%, on meat; dairy and eggs, making a plant-based diet the center of your meals will have positive effects on your health and the planet.
