Book Review Cancer Salves: A Botanical Approach to TreatmentBy Ingrid NaimanCancer Salves discusses the pros and cons of treating cancer using a forgotten form of cancer treatment, escharotics. A great reference resource and a fascinating read as the research in the book is scholarly and exhaustive with the information provided on individual herbs, helpful. The book gives a good historical overview, from Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century mystic, and her violet salve, to plants used by Native Americans, and early doctors in the 1800's including Harry Hoxsey. Ingrid Naiman believes "cancer is a disease of congestion in the experiential realm." Suppression of feelings have been mentioned by a number of researchers as a cause of cancer or at least playing a role in cancer development. While she supports physical measures to treat cancer, Naiman encourages people to dig deeper into themselves to deal with unresolved issues, and deal with them. The value of this book is the access to information that would otherwise be unavailable and allow someone with cancer to make up their own mind. Doctors often take much of the healthy tissue surrounding cancer in an attempt get all of it, whereas the escharotics causes a separation between cancerous tissue and healthy tissue. The book has color photographs demonstrating this. Another reviewer said it best, summarized here: Do not attempt to put any of the programs outlined in Cancer Salves into practice unless you are prepared to take full and complete personal responsibility for your own health and healing or why you may have gotten ill in the first place. This is about personal responsibility at all levels. This book is a map, a guide, not a guarantee. It gives someone resources to make their own educated decisions. What comes of your decisions is your own responsibility, as it should be. I for one am very grateful to Dr. Naiman for this invaluable resource.
